Question

Do you know the meaning of the following industry terms?

  1. Barney
  2. Basher
  3. M & E Tracks
  4. Soubrette

Answers

  1. Barney: A flexible, waterproof covering used to protect the camera and reduce its noise when sound recording occurs along with the filming process. The barney protects the camera in cold weather as it contains a heating element.
  2. Basher:  A small lamp that can be utilized in the same fashion as a spot or generic light. Wattage usually ranges between two hundred and fifty and five hundred.
  3. M & E Tracks: The incomplete final mix of a sound-track that contains the music and the effects but not the dialogue. The final mix contains all three though the dialogue is recorded on a separate track. The M and E tracks can be used independently from the dialogue track. This is particularly useful in the production of a foreign release where another dialogue track will be used for the specific audience.
  4. Soubrette:  A female character who is coquettish in behavior. Formerly in the stereotypical role of the French maid the character is quite flirtatious.
